TOKYO: The assassination of a former Japanese leader is a rare act of violence in a country like Japan. Shinzo AbeQuestions are being raised about the motive and identity of the shooter. Here’s what we know based on media reports and official statements.
What happened?
Abe was just beginning a campaign speech in Nara, western Japan on Friday when he received a gunshot from behind. The distance between the shots was about 3 meters (10 feet). Two shots were heard. Who was the shooter
The gunman has been identified Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, an unemployed former member of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force — Japan’s navy — who is being investigated for murder following the confirmation of Abe’s death. NHK reported that Abe worked for the force between 2002 and 2005. The Asahi ShimbunNewspaper reported that he had been working in Kyoto prefecture as a forklift driver.
What did the suspect say?
Kyodo reported that the suspect confessed to police that he originally planned to attack Abe, a leader of a religious organization he felt had caused his mother’s bankruptcy. The report stated that he had a grudge against Abe. He claimed to have accused Abe of having promoted the Japanese religious group. He also denied any political motives for the shooting, it was reported.
The suspect followed AbeNHK reported that he attended other campaign events, including one in Okayama, on July 7, apparently to try to find a place where an attack could be carried out, citing investigators. NHK reports that he arrived at Nara to begin speaking about an hour after Abe had begun speaking.
Which weapon did he use to fight?
According to police, the gun was homemade and measured 40cm in length by 20cm high. Close-up shots of the weapon lying on the ground showed two tubes that were wrapped in black tape.
The Yomiuri Newspaper reported that the suspect said the weapon could fire six bullets at once. Yomiuri reports that officials discovered what may have been fragment holes in a campaign car, which was parked around 20 meters from Abe.
What is the police doing right now?
Police also discovered other guns at the residence of the suspect, which were also homemade. Because the weapons were handcrafted, experts in explosives were summoned to the site.
The suspect was first arrested for attempted murder, but those charges were upgraded to murder on Sunday, after Abe’s death.
