United Airlines and Emirates have announced a codeshare agreement that would allow them to sell seats on each other’s flights.

The accord comes after American airlines fought against Gulf carriers expanding in the United States.

United said that flights to Dubai will begin in March 2023.

DULLES — United Airlines and Emirates will sell seats on one other’s planes, signalling a shift in the two companies’ economic methods.

As part of the agreement, United stated that flights to Emirates’ hub in Dubai will begin in March from Newark Liberty International Airport.

The codeshare agreement, announced by the CEOs on Wednesday, will give the airlines access to the other carrier’s destinations and is the latest example of thawing in the relationship between US and Gulf airlines, particularly as international air travel recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic that lasted more than two years.

Emirates’ president, Tim Clark, expressed hope that the United deal will expand into a joint venture, similar to the one the Dubai-based airline has with Australian carrier Qantas.

I don’t see why not,” Clark told reporters at an event announcing the contract with United at Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C.

If regulators accept the deal, travellers will be able to earn and burn frequent flyer points on both carriers.

United and other major US carriers, such as Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, had spent years campaigning against the rise of big Persian Gulf airlines in the US, claiming the state-owned carriers were competing unfairly through government subsidies, which those governments disputed.

Emirates said last week that its codeshare agreement with United rival JetBlue Airways will end on October 30. Meanwhile, Etihad Airways, located in Abu Dhabi, has announced plans to expand its collaboration with JetBlue, based in New York.

In June, Qatar Airways and American Airlines announced plans to expand their codeshare partnership.
