There are six days left for the Presidential electionThe ballot boxes are now on their way. The designated officers were able to take the boxes to the states on Tuesday after the traditional handing over. One such, for example, took a Vistara flight in a seat assigned for ‘Mr Ballot Box’, from New Delhi to Chandigarh.

On flights to other States, seats were also set aside. However, the rule was that each ballot box must have its own ticket. The seat next to ‘Mr Ballot Box’ is occupied by the officer personally supervising the transport. Election Commission rules require that the poll material is collected by one of the assistant returning officers.

According to officials of the Election Commission, the boxes were transported completely by air from 2017 onwards. “In the past, they have been transported by trains as well. Today they have gone to one state by road,” an official said.

Once the ballot boxes reach the state capitals, these are stored in previously sanitised and properly sealed “strong rooms” that are strictly monitored through cameras.

The Election Commission began Tuesday, in addition to the distribution of ballot boxes, sending ballot papers, special pens and other sealed election material, to state Assembly Secretariats. This was in addition the National Capital Territory of Delhi, Union Territory of Puducherry, and the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

The entire process took place at Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi under the supervision and oversight of Rajiv Kumar, Chief Election Commissioner, and Anup Chandra Pantdey, Election Commissioner. Officers who came to collect ballot boxes and other election material were accompanied by Delhi Police officers.

They are required to return the material on the same day.

The sealed ballot boxes and all other election material will then be taken back to the Office of the Returning Officer. This is the Rajya Sabha Secretariat.

Again, all the material will be transported in aircraft cabins — never out of sight of accompanying officers.

According to the schedule released by the EC, June 29 was the last day for nominations. The 16th presidential election will see polling on July 18 with the counting of votes taking place on July 21.
