Spain thinks the Nord Stream Gas Leaks were Most Likely Intentional – and Blames Russia.

It was a premeditated move, and in my judgement, it is very likely related to the Kremlin’s demand for continual provocation,” Spanish Energy Minister Teresa Ribera told reporters, according to Reuters.
Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, has called suggestions that Russia was behind the alleged attack “stupid.

The leaks are presently being investigated by Swedish police, and the EU suspects sabotage, especially given the incident’s timing in the midst of a tense energy impasse between Brussels and Moscow.

According to Spanish Energy Minister Teresa Ribera, the damage to the two underwater Nord Stream gas pipelines was most likely a premeditated action related to the Russian government.

It was a premeditated act, Ribera told reporters, according to Reuters. In my perspective, it can very certainly be related to the Kremlin’s demand for perpetual provocation.

When CNBC reached out to Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday morning, no one was immediately available to comment.

Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, said Wednesday that suggestions that Russia was behind the alleged attack were ridiculous.

The reason of the gas leakage is unknown at this time. The leaks are presently being investigated by Swedish authorities, and the European Union suspects sabotage, especially given the incident’s proximity to a tense energy stalemate between Brussels and Moscow.

The Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines run through the Baltic Sea and connect Russia to Germany.

On Monday, seismologists recorded explosions near the peculiar Nord Stream gas leaks, which are located in international seas but within Denmark’s and Sweden’s exclusive economic zones.

The explosions sent gas into the Baltic Sea. According to camera evidence, the greatest gas leak generated a surface disturbance of around 1 kilometre (0.62 miles), while the smallest leak caused a circle of approximately 200 metres.

If proof of purposeful disruption is discovered, EU foreign policy head Josep Borrell has threatened “strong and united” reprisal actions.

His remarks matched those of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who promised the “strongest possible response” to any deliberate interruption of operational European energy infrastructure.

Notably, neither party openly blamed Russia for the apparent strike.

Russian Ships Reportedly seen in Vicinity of the Leaks

CNN said Thursday, citing three anonymous individuals, that European security authorities detected Russian naval support ships and submarines near the Nord Stream gas pipeline breaches.

When asked to comment on the CNN claim, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated there was a significantly greater NATO presence in the area. NATO did not immediately react to CNBC’s request for comment.

The North Atlantic Council, the Western military alliance NATO’s main political decision-making body, said in a statement Thursday that “any deliberate strike against Allies’ essential infrastructure will be faced with a unified and resolute reaction.

All available information suggests that this was the product of purposeful, reckless, and negligent sabotage. “These leaks endanger ships and cause significant environmental harm,” the council stated.

Neither pipeline was pumping gas at the time of the leaks, but both lines were still under pressure: Nord Stream 1 ceased pumping gas to Europe “indefinitely” earlier this month, with Moscow’s operator claiming that international sanctions against Russia prevented it from performing critical maintenance.

Meanwhile, the Nord Stream 2 pipeline was never formally inaugurated since Germany refused to certify it for commercial operations owing to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
