ScienceDaily: Electric cars pass remote road testing

According to a new study by The Australian National University (ANU), electric vehicles can travel the distances needed to reach essential services in remote and rural Australia.

Dr Bjorn, who is co-author of these results, says that it’s more possible to use electric vehicles in remote areas than you might expect.

Dr. Sturmberg said that they looked at the distances between peoples’ homes and the closest “service hub” town — where they might shop, for instance.

“The vast majority of Australian residents (93%) could make those trips even with the lowest-range electric vehicle currently on the market.” It’s possible to do this without having to recharge your vehicle on the way.

Dr. Sturmberg stated that this is no excuse to exclude remote communities from the discussion.

“We must do better — electric cars shouldn’t be put in the too hard basket. Dr. Sturmberg stated that it is unfair and unjust to leave remote communities driving diesel cars, particularly as they will be the ones most affected by climate change.

“Yes, there are obvious barriers — long distances and unpaved roads. The benefits are just as obvious. It is expensive and difficult to get diesel to these communities. However, electric engines are more efficient and robust than traditional fuel engines.

Dr Francis Markham, coauthor, stated that we don’t know everything and that some aspects need to be investigated further.

Dr Markham explained that “for example, we don’t have any clear data about the effect of unsealed road conditions or other conditions on electric vehicle ranges.”

“But information about the performance of electric cars in extremely hot conditions is still missing.” We are positive that electric vehicles have a place in remote and regional Australia.

Researchers say transport is one of our most important issues to address in order to reduce the adverse effects of climate change.

Dr. Sturmberg declared that “The transport sector is responsible 25 percent of global emissions and more 18% of Australia’s greenhouse gas pollution.”

“It needs to rapidly decarbonise — electric vehicles are going be a critical part of that process.”
