Review of ‘Thor, Love and Thunder’: A disappointingly shallow Marvel Encore for Taika Waititi

Thor: Love and Thunder seemed certain to be a slam. Director Taika WaititiAfter 2017’s highly entertaining, the helm is back. Thor: RagnarokWith Chris Hemsworth“The Asgardian Avenger” finds his funny groove. Natalie PortmanMaking her dramatic return to the live-action Marvel Cinematic UniverseAfter a nine-year absence.

Surprisingly the 29th MCU movie, which was released Friday in theaters, fails to meet expectations. Thor’s movie attempts to combine comedy and drama while combining multiple classic comic storylines within a single narrative. fourth solo adventureSpreads too thinly and Ends upFeeling shallow (even down right to it). Two scenes from the post-credits scene).

It starts promisingly enough with a striking introduction. Christian BaleGorr the God Butcher, a villainous god. His daughter is killed in his desert home-world. This leads him to confront a cruel, uncaring god and to launch a campaign to kill all divine beings.

This sequence is atmospheric and patient. It allows Bale to let his performance breathe, and allows us to feel his increasing despair, confusion, and rage. The Marvel Studios logo is displayed and the roller coaster begins. Do you feel any emotional resonance? You’re not getting emotional resonance in this movie.

You shouldn’t expect to spend a lot of time with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

In 2019, Thor was our last sighting. Avengers: EndgameHe had decided to join Guardians of the Galaxy in order to explore space after Thanos’ defeat. The God of Thunder outclasses all his new friends, leaving the Guardians feeling a little stale.

A visually stunning, colorful action sequence is presented. However, Thor and his ally Korg (Waititi), soon decide to take their own path. They abandon the Guardians storyline, and waste Chris Pratt and Karen Gillan before the joke can develop. This movie seems to be eager to escape the monotony and get back to the Asgardian storyline from Thor’s solo movies.

Thor meets Jane Foster (Portman), his ex-girlfriend on Earth. She is fighting Gorr, an Asgardian who attacks Thor’s fellow Asgardians. She is wielding Mjolnir his old hammer, which she was deemed worthy of in her darkest hours and has gained powers similar to his.

This storyline should be Love & Thunder’s emotional heart, given Jane’s very real human health issues. It doesn’t take enough time to let the challenges Jane faces sink in. The movie is too eager to move on to the next adventure and it has some dramatic moments that are not supported by the two post-credits scenes.

This need for speed extends into the action — Jane uses her new skills in amazing ways, but neither editing nor cinematography allow us to enjoy this. You won’t be able to retain the images from this movie in your mind the same way that moments from other MCU adventures do. Captain America’s elevator brawl Three Spider-Men swing into battleOr Scarlet Witch’s meeting with the Illuminati.

Although Jane and Thor’s awkwardness is at first quite funny, largely because of Portman’s charismaticism and chemistry, it doesn’t progress in a compelling way. The most memorable joke is about Thor and Stormbreaker, but it quickly becomes tiresome.

Evidently, Valkyrie is an Andrew Lloyd Webber fan.

King Valkyrie rounds out the hero squad (Tessa Thompson), who’s bored with her role as the leader of the magical tourist trap that New Asgard has become (this location includes an excellent deep-cut cameo). Although the movie doesn’t explore her ennui sufficiently, Thompson injects enough mischief into the character to make it a delight to watch. Even her clothing choices suggest a fascinating inner world. Her Phantom of the Opera shirt, for example, is far more intriguing than any superhero costume.

Jane and Valkyrie have a peaceful conversation that is one of the best scenes in the film. It’s rare for the movie to slow down and allow its writers and actors the space to connect emotionally. Even with Hemsworth’s charismatic screen presence and implacable comic timing aside, it’s difficult to imagine how this adventure would have been without Thor.

Gorr’s threat is greatly diminished after his memorable introduction. Jason Aaron’s introduction to The God Butcher’s comics counterpart Thor 2012: God of Thunder Run) feels like a major threat as Thor follows a trail of divine slaughter across the universe.

Love and Thunder is a remark on this. It largely reduces Gorr’s villainy to kidnapping Asgardian kids as part of a larger plot. Gorr feels less like Gorr the God Botherer and doesn’t feel a direct threat.

Bale’s performance, and Bale’s aesthetic choices give Bale plenty of creepy spectral boogeyman vibes.Apparently inspiredAphex Twin’s disturbingly unsettling Video by Come to Daddy). The MCU’s midpoint confrontation with the heroes ranks among the most visually striking sequences. It makes use of shadow and color in a clever way.

This movie is not nearly as good. cameo-ladenIts immediate MCU predecessor Doctor Strange and The Multiverse of MadnessHowever, it does include a scene-stealing element. Russell CroweAs a narcissistic Zeus. His role is limited to a single set of shiny pieces that quickly fades into the background as the main narrative continues.

Love and Thunder fails to live up to the extraordinary stories that inspired it. It does not follow its director’s style and doesn’t maximize its actors’ dramatic potential. It feels more like an unsatisfying, shallow mashup. While it is still a silly, fun entry in the MCU, it is not the classic Thor story that the hunky hero believes he’s on.
