E Palaniswami (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) has been appointed interim general secretary of the party. This comes just days after O Paneerselvam was fired as senior leader. OPS’ son, and MP Ravindranath were among those who were removed.

EPS has taken over control of the party and has expelled all OPS supporters from the primary membership. OPS and his group had opposed the abolition the dual leadership model, in which EPS was the co-coordinator/coordinator of OPS’ leadership responsibilities.

OPS’ son Ravindranath and ex-MLA Venkatraman, Jaya Pradeep, Marudhu Aguraj, Syed Khan, among others, were removed.

Monday’s election by the AIADMK saw EPS elected as interim general secretary. OPS was also removed from the primary membership of the party for allegedly acting against its interest.

OPS was also accused of colluding and storming party HQ with the help state police, as well as taking away documents.

In league with the DMK government, the OPS took the party’s belongings out of the office. He stated that several workers sustained injuries while protecting the party’s headquarters from antisocial elements.

The General Council (GC), of the AIADMK, elected Palaniswami, 68 as its leader. This was after a long internal power struggle, shortly after Panneerselvam had rejected the Madras High Court’s request to stop the meeting of the rival faction. One judge ruled that courts would not interfere with the party’s private affairs.

Before the GC meeting took place in a marriage hall in Chennai, violence erupted between bitter rivals Palaniswami (EPS) and Panneerselvam (“OPS”) around the AIADMK Headquarters in Chennai. After which authorities sealed the premises. Some individuals also sustained injuries.

AIADMK, which supported a resolution that eliminated the two former top positions of Coordinator (and Joint Coordinator) held by Palaniswami, and Panneerselvam, respectively, has tried hard to preserve unity following the December 5th death of Jayalalithaa, its chief minister and supremo. Panneerselvam countered and “expelled” Palaniswamy as a primary member party.

Also, the AIADMK has officially resolved to hold organisational votes in four months for the election of a General Secretary. It amended many bylaws, including new norms and prerequisites for fighting for the top party position.
