Palme d’Or Winner Triangle of Sadness Star Charlbi Dean Dies at 32

Charlbi Dean, a South African model and actor who had a breakthrough performance in the Palme d’Or-winning Triangle of Sadness in 2022 and recurred on the CW’s Black Lightning, died Monday in New York City of an unexpected abrupt illness. She was 32 years old.

Her representative verified the news, saying she died of a “sudden illness.” Although specifics about her medical condition are unknown, the 32-year-old was hospitalised at the time of her death.

In the film, Dean plays model Yaya, one of the uber-rich guests invited for a cruise on a superyacht helmed by an unhinged captain (Harrelson) that ends catastrophically, leaving the survivors stranded on a desert island.

Dean signed with UTA in January and was also repped by Silver Lining Entertainment.

She returned for the 2013 sequel and has since appeared in Death Race 3: Inferno (2013), Blood in the Water (2016), Don’t Sleep (2017), and Porthole (2018).

She was cast in the CW’s Black Lightning as Syonide, an orphan-turned-assassin who was taught by Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III) after appearing in a 2017 episode of CBS’ Sherlock Holmes drama Elementary. Dean appears in nine episodes of the first two seasons of the show, from the pilot in 2018 until the first episode of Season 2.

She covered the South African versions of GQ and Elle in December 2008 and July 2010, respectively, as a model.

Charlbi Dean Kriek, born on February 5, 1990, began modelling at the age of six and has been in various advertisements. At the age of 12, she enrolled in Waterfront Theatre School and joined Alfa Model Management.

She made her acting debut in Donovan Mash’s 2010 South African film Spud. It was based on the same-name novel and received positive reviews from critics.

Charlbi then featured in Spud 2: The Madness Continues, which was released in 2013. She went on to appear in films such as Death Race 3: Inferno, Don’t Sleep, An Interview with God, and others.

Charlbi rose to prominence after portraying the assassin Syonide in the CW series Black Lightning. She played the part for two seasons and rose to prominence in the entertainment world. Black Lightning debuted in January 2018 and will continue to air for four seasons till May 2021.

Charlbi Dean Kriek had a successful modelling career, appearing in the South African editions of GQ and Elle in 2008 and 2010.

Triangle of Sadness, a satirical dark comedy film released in 2022, was her final film. The film will be released in theatres on September 28, 2022, in the United States, and on October 28, 2022, in the United Kingdom.

Charlbi Dean Kriek was engaged to model Luke Volker and was survived by her family members. She took a pause from her career in 2008 after being engaged in a car accident with model Ashton Schnehage.
