Meta and Qualcomm Join Forces to Create VR Chips for the Metaverse

Head-mounted virtual reality displays are becoming increasingly popular, but they can be expensive to buy, especially if you want the very best resolution and frame rate possible. With that in mind, Qualcomm Technologies Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), and META Unlimited today announced that they have entered into an agreement to design and manufacture custom-built chipsets designed specifically for applications in the MetaverseTM. The companies will deliver products that provide immersive virtual reality experiences previously unattainable with conventional graphics processing unit (GPU) technology alone.

The businesses said on Friday that they are working together to create unique chipsets for virtual reality goods.

Using Qualcomm’s “extended reality” (XR) Snapdragon technology, the two U.S. technology behemoths have announced a multi-year partnership “to work on a new age of spatial computing.” Technology that combines the physical and digital worlds, such as virtual and augmented reality, is referred to as extended reality.

According to a news release from Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, “We’re partnering with Qualcomm Technologies on bespoke virtual reality chipsets — powered by Snapdragon XR platforms and technologies — for our future pipeline of Quest devices.”

The virtual reality headsets from Meta are referred to as Quest products. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 processor is now used in the Meta Quest 2 headset.

With the goal of having people working and playing in virtual worlds in the near future, Facebook-parent Meta has placed its future on the metaverse, a phrase that incorporates virtual and augmented reality technologies.

Companies in the smartphone industry, from Apple to Samsung, have developed their own proprietary processors to set themselves apart from rivals and produce better products than they could have with off-the-shelf CPUs.

It makes sense for Meta to concentrate on bespoke processors as it seeks to distinguish its headsets and perhaps produce distinctive user experiences.

According to Zuckerberg, creating virtual reality presents new, multi-dimensional problems in terms of cost, form factor, and spatial computing. These chipsets will enable us to continue pushing the boundaries of virtual reality and provide amazing experiences.

The duration of the agreement between the firms as well as its financial details weren’t made public.

While losses expanded in Reality Labs, which includes its VR business, in the second quarter of the year, it comes as Meta prepares to release a new virtual reality headset in October.
