Keir Starmer cleared after police ‘Beergate’ probe

Angela Rayner, Sir Keir Starmer, and Angela Rayner won’t be fined because they allegedly broke Covid-19 rules during a campaign event last April. This was an issue that they had staked a political career on.

Durham police investigated Labour leader David Cameron and his deputy, alleging that there were violations of restrictions when curry and beer were consumed at campaign events.

Starmer and Rayner said that they would resign if given fixed penalty notices. This contrasts with Boris Johnson, who was penalised for a gathering at Downing Street. However, the prime minister refused to resign on that issue and was forced out of his position as Conservative leader this week by a ministerial revolt.

Starmer and Rayner consistently argued that no restrictions were broken in the “Beergate” scandal since the food and drink came during a work event.

In a statement, the Durham Constabulary said “there is no case to answer for a contravention of the regulations, due to the application of an exception, namely reasonably necessary work”.

It added that after a “thorough, detailed and proportionate” investigation it would “not be issuing any fixed penalty notices in respect of the gathering and no further action will be taken”.
