Joe Biden felt pressured to take action following the Supreme Court decision regarding abortion

According to the White House, US President Joe Biden will sign a Friday executive order to ensure women have access to contraception and abortion after the Supreme Court reaffirmed Roe v Wade’s legalization of abortion.

Biden, a Democrat has felt pressured by supporters, especially progressives, to act after the landmark decision that ended nearly 50 years of protections for women’s reproductive rights.

Because the president has limited powers, states in the US can pass laws that restrict abortion and medication access, so the impact of the executive order will be minimal.

Biden will direct Health and Human Services Department to ensure that “medication abortion” is protected and expanded, as the White House stated.

Experts believe that a pill to end pregnancies early is unlikely to be available without a prescription for many years. The presidential order would not affect states that have restrictions on the medication.

He will also direct this department to ensure that women have access emergency medical care, family plan services, contraception and contraception (IUDs)

Biden’s attorney General and White House Counsel will convene pro-bono attorneys and other organizations to offer legal counsel for both patients seeking abortion and providers.

“Such representation could include protecting rights to travel out of the state to seek medical treatment,” said the White House in a statement.

Supreme Court ruling reinstated the right of states to ban abortion. Women with unplanned pregnancies now have the option of either traveling to another state, purchasing abortion pills online or having an illegal, potentially deadly abortion.

Biden is scheduled to make remarks on the topic at 11:30 AM EDT (1530 GMT) and has condemned the court’s decision. It was celebrated by both anti-abortion activists and conservatives.

This issue could drive Democrats to the polls during the November midterm elections when Republicans are likely to take control of Congress. Through Vice President Kamala Harris’s tiebreaking vote, Democrats hold a slim majority of seats in the House of Representatives. They also control the evenly divided Senate.

Biden’s Friday executive order is designed to protect patients’ privacy as well as ensure safety for mobile abortion clinics located at state borders. The White House also directed the establishment of an task force to coordinate administration’s response to reproductive health care access.
