“It has been confirmed that Mr. Rajapaksa was allowed to enter Singapore for a private visit. He has not requested asylum nor has he been granted asylum. “Singapore generally does not grant requests to asylum,” said the Singapore Foreign Ministry statement.

Rajapaksa has not yet to officially resign, despite having promised to quit after angry demonstrators broke into the official residence of Rajapaksa and took to his pool to demand that his family’s ruling line dynasty be ended. He left the Maldivian capital Malé on board a “Saudi flight,” a high-ranking security source in Colombo told CNN.

CNN believes the source was referring to Saudia flight 788, which left Malé at 11:30 a.m. according to the source. According to the Changi Airport website: The flight made land in Singapore at 7 :17 p.m. on Thursday. Saudia is Saudi Arabia’s flag carrier. CNN tried to reach Saudia but was unsuccessful.

Rajapaksa, who had fled Sri Lanka in the morning hours of Wednesday to seek refuge in Maldives, had only been there for one day. This was the same day that he had promised to resign.

The speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament had not yet received a formal resignation notice. This raises questions regarding the motives and intentions of the self-exiled leader that appointed the prime minister to act as president in his absence from the island nation.

Shortly after Rajapaksa’s departure, protesters stormed Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office in an attempt to get his resignation. removal. Wickremesinghe called for a nationwide curfew to be in place overnight.

Thursday’s address was televised by Brigadier Nilantha Premaratne, an army spokesperson.

Premaratne stated that protesters who intend to harm the armed forces and public property are urged to stop violence as soon as possible. Otherwise, they will face the consequences.

Sri Lanka’s parliament won’t reconvene until Rajapaksa officially submits his resignation, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Adeywardena stated Thursday.

The expectation was that parliament would begin the process of choosing a president by Saturday with the goal to vote in a new leader by the 20th of July.

This timeline will remain in place until Rajapaksa is officially removed from his position.

Demonstrators carry the gate to Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's office premises, during protests in Colombo on Wednesday.

Protesters across the country have pledged to continue demonstrations until both men are removed.

As questions swirled about Sri Lanka’s future on Thursday morning, calm settled over the streets of Colombo, the commercial capital.

An attorney representing the People’s Protest Movement stated Thursday that all occupied buildings will be returned to authorities, with the exception being the Presidential Secretariat.

Swasthika said to reporters, “We want to affirm this is a peaceful demonstration and have no intention of resorting to any form violence.”

Sri Lanka is in chaos and its President has fled. Here's what we know

“This has been and will remain a peaceful movement.”

However, there are many signs that the country is on a knife edge.

In the midst of severe fuel shortages, abandoned cars line streets next to gas stations. People no longer have the ability to drive to work so they bike instead. Some even sleep in their cars.

One police officer in Sri Lanka was said to have been severely injured by the protests. It added that an army sergeant was also injured.

United Nations Secretary General António Guterres on Thursday said he was following the events in Sri Lanka “very closely” and called for a “peaceful and democratic transition.”

He wrote on Twitter, “It’s important that the root causes and grievances of protesters are addressed.” “I urge party leaders to embrace a spirit of compromise for peaceful and democratic transition.”
