On Thursday, General Motors unveiled its updated 2023 GMC Canyon, a more upscale alternative to the existing midsize pickup.
Early in 2019, GM plans to start making the 2023 Canyon, and in spring 2023, it will start making new AT4X off-road variants.
The vehicle will cost between approximately $40,000 and more over $60,000.

DEARBORN — The newly redesigned GMC Canyon, a more expensive option than the current midsize truck, was unveiled by General Motors on Thursday. It includes a new off-road AT4X model that will increase the vehicle’s price range.

The new AT4X model has distinctive interior and external appearance in addition to off-road performance components. It will debut alongside a typical AT4 off-road truck, a high-end Denali model, and a base Elevation trim with a starting price of roughly $40,000. For the first year of manufacturing, the business will also sell a limited-edition “AT4X Edition 1” car starting at $63,350. The current model’s starting price is capped at $50,000.

Automakers have been expanding their off-road and performance versions to their portfolios to boost profit margins before they migrate further to electric vehicles, which can deliver high performance but have lower margins than gas-powered vehicles, in response to pent-up demand and record high costs.

In the latter part of 2018, GM began providing AT4 models with the full-size Sierra pickup. Since then, it has been included to every GMC model. According to executives, AT4 currently makes up nearly a third of Canyon sales.

The Canyon is a sister of the recently released Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickup, but the manufacturer has made significant stylistic differences between the two new cars. However, the 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine that powers both pickups and gives them their common base and “bones” has a maximum output of 310 horsepower and 430 foot-pounds of torque.

The 2023 Canyon is anticipated to go into production early in the following year, with AT4X variants following in the spring of 2023. On Thursday, GM began taking reservations for the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X Edition 1.

The 2023 Canyons are wider and taller than the previous model. It has nearly the same amount of inside room as the existing car despite being longer. Compared to the previous design, the new one is more aggressive and features a huge rectangular grille as well as updated versions of the brand’s distinctive C-shaped front lighting.

While crucial to the business, midsize pickup vehicle sales are far smaller than those of GM’s larger full-size pickup trucks. For instance, GMC sold fewer Canyons—roughly 13,700—than Sierra light-duty pickups—more than 70,000—during the first half of this year.

As the global automobile industry continues to deal with supply chain issues, including a lack of semiconductor chips, GM’s U.S. sales were down approximately 18% during the second quarter.
