Our hearts are crushed and absolutely devastated to inform family and friends that our darling son, Jalen, has died,” Hill’s father, George, wrote on Instagram on Tuesday.

Jalen Hill, a talented basketball player for the UCLA Bruins from 2017 to 2021, died Tuesday, according to his father. Hill was 22 years old.

Our hearts are crushed and absolutely devastated to inform family and friends that our darling son, Jalen, has passed away,” Hill’s father, George Hill, posted on Instagram Tuesday night, according to a screenshot shared by Tarek Fattal of the Los Angeles Daily News.

Jalen went missing while on a trip to Costa Rica, according to George, and the family “just learnt of his passing.

We understand that many people may have questions, but we are unable to provide any answers at this time.

He went on, “We know Jalen has touched the lives of many individuals. We also recognise the important role that so many of you have played in his life.

As we try to navigate this heartbreaking period in our lives, we beg that you please give us time to grieve,” George said at the end of the post.

Jalen’s old squad issued a statement on Twitter in response to the news.

Our programme is very sorry to learn of the death of former student-athlete Jalen Hill,” UCLA Men’s Basketball tweeted. “During this difficult time, our hearts go out to his family and friends.
Jalen’s high school basketball coach at Corona Centennial High School, Josh Giles, also spoke out about his former player’s death.

He lived on the same block as me,” Giles explained to the Los Angeles Daily News.

It would take us 25 minutes to drive to and from school every day, the coach recounted. We’d talk in the car, and it was never about basketball.” “We’d discuss politics, relationships, and religion.” He was a bright, inquisitive child. I adored him. He was unrivalled.

Jalen and two other UCLA players, LiAngelo Ball and Cody Riley, were arrested in Hangzhou in 2017 for allegedly shoplifting sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store.

UCLA announced in a statement to PEOPLE at the time, “UCLA student-athletes are involved in an issue in Hangzhou, China. In this matter, the University is fully collaborating with local authorities, and we have no more comment at this time.”

The three returned home and were suspended for the rest of their freshman year, according to Sports Illustrated. Ball left the programme, but Jalen and Riley returned to the floor in 2018.

Jalen has been candid about his issues with anxiety and depression since then, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Alen’s last game for the Bruins occurred on January 30, 2021. He decided to take a rest after the game.

I’m just like, nah, I need to take this vacation,” Hill said at the time to the Los Angeles Times. “It was a difficult decision to make, but once I knew what I had to do, it wasn’t so difficult because I realised, like, this is going to benefit me.
