Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe Dies After Shooting

Shinzo Abe (Japan’s longest-serving prime Minister) was killed while delivering an address in Nara, 40 minutes east from Osaka. NHK, Japan’s state broadcaster, first reported his death.

Abe, 67 years old, spoke ahead of the Japanese Upper House Elections on Sunday. According to local media, police claim that Abe was struck from behind using a made-up shotgun. Tetsuya Yamagami (41 years old) was taken into custody.

Abe was twice Japan’s prime Minister. After a brief one-year term in 2007, Abe held the office from 2012 to 2020. These eight years were the longest tenure of any prime minister in country history. Abe was not elected out of his position as prime minister but resigned both times because of health problems resulting from ulcerative collitis.

Abe, who was known in Japan for his hardline conservatism and his sanity, was widely regarded as a conservative figure. Abe was in Nara to campaign for Kei Sato (a member of Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party in Japan’s Upper House parliament) ahead of Sunday’s election.

He was the heir of one of Japan’s political families. Shintaro Abe, Abe’s father, was Japan’s foreign secretary from 1982 to 1985. Shinzo’s grandfather Nobusuke Kishi was a former prime minster and helped found Liberal Democratic Party which has been at power for 63 out of the 67 year since its inception.
