After trailing in the polls going into Election Day, Democrat Scott Peltola defeated Republican Sarah Palin in the special election for the Senate seat from Alaska. The victory was unexpected and marks the first time Palin has lost an election in her home state since she was elected mayor of Wasilla, Alaska at age 23 and governor of Alaska at age 34.

In Alaska’s first ranked-choice election, Democrat Mary Peltola beat Republican Sarah Palin in the race for the open House seat. This was a significant upset for the former governor.

Former state lawmaker Peltola won the special election, defeating Palin and another Republican, Nick Begich III, to become Alaska’s first indigenous congressman. The Democrat received enough second-choice votes from Begich’s supporters after taking first place in the original results to defeat Palin, who had the support of former President Donald Trump and had previously won a statewide campaign in 2006.

Palin was running for office for the first time since leaving her position as governor of Alaska in 2009, one year after she was selected as John McCain’s running mate for vice president.

Palin’s quick political return is out the window if she loses, but she is also running in Alaska’s normal congressional election this autumn, when the victor will get a full two-year term.

Although Alaska’s ranked-choice voting method and Palin’s strong personality were unexpected variables in this race, Peltola’s victory is the most recent in a line of Democratic overperformances in special congressional elections since the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade. In her campaign, Peltola vowed to uphold women’s freedom to choose, safeguard the environment, and focus on regional problems like the salmon crisis in Western Alaska.

Palin outspent the Democrat by a 4-to-1 margin.

With a 53 percent to 43 percent margin against President Joe Biden, Trump easily carried Alaska in 2020.

In addition to being a member of the Yup’ik indigenous group, Peltola has held the position of executive director of the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, which links more than 100 tribes in Western Alaska.

The special election for Alaska’s sole congressional district attracted more than 45 candidates early this year. Four finalists were announced for the special elections in mid-August. Begich is a member of a distinguished political family in the state, so Palin wasn’t the only well-known name on the list.

The Republican is the grandson of former Democratic Rep. Nick Begich, who once held Alaska’s House seat and was declared dead after his plane went missing while he was campaigning with Rep. Hale Boggs (D-La.) in 1972. He is also the nephew of former Democratic Sen. Mark Begich and state Senate Minority Leader Tom Begich.

The election to succeed the late Republican Rep. Don Young in Alaska took place a few weeks ago, but mail-in ballots from all over the enormous state have been arriving since then. Then the ranked-choice system has taken effect: Under Alaska’s new electoral system, ballots are retabulated (such that support for the lowest vote-getter transfers to those voters’ next choice) if a candidate does not get a majority of first-place votes, until a majority winner is determined. In 2020, the voting system was enacted into law.

Even though Palin has been out of office for a while, she hasn’t completely ruled out a comeback to politics. Palin had been a political pundit for Fox News in the middle of the 2010s. In 2011, she acquired a house in Arizona, which she later sold. Additionally, she sued The New York Times in a well-known defamation case, which she lost earlier this year.
