As a heat wave grips the West, millions of California residents are being asked to set their thermostats to 78 degrees in order to save electricity today

An strong heat wave is expected to cover most of the West this week, prompting California officials to encourage residents to reduce their energy consumption for the second day in a row in order to prevent stressing the electrical grid.

The California Independent System Operator, which maintains 80% of the state’s system, has issued a Flex Alert, encouraging homeowners to limit their electricity use between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. through at least Thursday.

Residents should also pre-cool their houses at 72 degrees Fahrenheit before 4 p.m. and set their thermostats to 78 degrees or higher during conservation hours, according to the operator. It also advised residents to avoid charging electric vehicles or using major appliances.

As severe heat is anticipated to blanket most of California over the holiday weekend, more Flex Alerts are likely to be issued,” the operator warned in a news release Wednesday.

According to the power grid manager, the load on the grid increases in the late afternoon hours as air conditioner use increases and solar energy supply decreases.

Across seven Western states, including densely populated areas like San Francisco and Los Angeles, about 50 million people are under excessive heat warnings until Labor Day weekend.

According to Alexis Clouser of the National Weather Service in San Francisco, “this will be the longest and most intense heat streak so far this calendar year.

This is significant since the West has already experienced very high temperatures this summer, exacerbating the region’s drought, which experts attribute to human-caused climate change.
Because neighbouring states are expecting high temperatures, California’s grid will be limited in its ability to import power, according to the operator.

We’re monitoring for any potential energy supply deficits, as well as changes in conditions like wildfires or generation or transmission failures that could influence supplies or the grid,” the company stated in an email.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency.
“We expect this tremendous heat to last for a period of time that we haven’t seen in a long time,” he said during a news conference.

Labor Day is forecast to be the hottest day during this extended heat wave, with temperatures rising 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit over usual on other days.

Widespread daily high temperature records are possible, with some sites perhaps setting monthly records,” according to the Weather Prediction Center.

This is a Terrible Heat.

According to CNN, other states affected include the majority of Nevada, sections of Arizona, Idaho, Utah, Oregon, and Washington state. Shackelford, Robert

Temperatures in regions under excessive heat warnings could reach 116 degrees, while heat advisories could reach 105 degrees.

Heat advisories are in effect for Boise, Idaho, Reno, Nevada, and Seattle, Washington.

California cities such as Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Springs, Fresno, San Francisco, Sacramento, and Redding are under excessive heat warnings, though not all are predicted to reach 116 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Shackelford.

Meanwhile, forecasters are encouraging people to take the excessive heat seriously since it can be deadly.

This is a lethal heat, so use caution, said Joe Sirard of the National Weather Service in Los Angeles.

Some people do not pay close enough attention to the prediction, and as a result, they can put themselves in danger and die. Obviously, it’s a very terrible subject to discuss, but people must be informed that heat can be fatal.

Excessive heat is the primary cause of weather-related mortality in the United States, and the conditions imposed by climate change have made extreme weather events more dangerous and common.

According to National Weather Service data, heat mortality outnumbered hurricane deaths by more than 15-to-1 over the last decade.
