A new study has shown that men living in the United States have a higher mortality rate than those who live in similar wealthy countries. American men are much more likely to die young from preventable causes than men in 10 other countries including Australia, Canada, and the UK. Also, financially struggling men were more likely to die in the U.S. than anywhere else.

The New reportThis is the latest report in a series of reports by the Commonwealth Fund, an independent nonprofit focused on reforming health care. These reports examine publicly available data as well as surveys that the organization has conducted. They often compare the U.S. with its high-income peer nations, with the most recent comparisons including Norway and Australia.

They were able to achieve this last year. List of rankedThe U.S. is last on most health-care metrics, including the life expectancy above 60. A comparison report was published in April Find itAmerican women in their reproductive years were most likely to die of preventable causes. They were also more likely to have difficulty paying their medical bills and to avoid visiting doctors due to high healthcare costs. Unfortunately, the picture isn’t looking any rosier for American men.

The report showed that U.S. males were most likely to have multiple chronic health issues (29% in total) and second only for Australian men (35% to have a mental health problem). They also had the highest rate for avoidable deaths. This refers to dying from preventable causes prior to the age of 75. These gaps were even larger for American men with “income insecurity,” who were also at higher risk of not being able to pay for their health care and to avoid doctors. It was not surprising that American men were most dissatisfied with the status quo. Only one-third of them gave the U.S. healthcare system a high rating.

The only area where American men do better than their peers is prostate cancer. The U.S. had a lower mortality rate for prostate cancer than any other country. The report authors state that men in the U.S. are not getting the best health care, despite having greater resources than other nations.

This disparity can be explained by one factor: the U.S. doesn’t guarantee universal health care coverage to its residents, the authors note. The authors note that many of the most successful countries have established a single-payer system where the majority of costs are covered by the government. This is funded in part by taxes.

“This study makes clear that U.S. men are sicker, more stressed, and dying at much higher rates compared to men in other countries,” said Munira Z. Gunja, lead report author and senior researcher for the Commonwealth Fund’s International Program in Health Policy and Practice Innovation, in a statement. “This is largely because so many of them can’t afford the care they need. The United States is the world’s wealthiest democracy, yet its failure to provide universal health care leaves 16 million men uninsured and far more with high out-of-pocket costs.”

Numerous studies in the United States suggest that a single-payer system would not only provide universal healthcare coverage, but also be able to cover certain disabilities. Most likely, lowerHealth care costs are lower because there are fewer administrative tasks to manage them and more bargaining power when negotiating with the pharmaceutical and medical industries. The Commonwealth Fund Note that there is much variation in how these systems operate in terms of the government’s role (only some, like the UK, are fully nationalized, with doctors being public employees), and even in single-payer countries, there is still some room for private health insurance.
